I'd like someone to explain how awareness begins at conception. That's baseless without believing in magical thinking. Without a nervous system developed to a certain degree I'd conjecture that there can be no "awareness".

though i used the same headline as the article, i do not agree to it. Evolution is not equal to religion and they are merely two different perspectives of the same reality. Each one portrays a different worldview, a different world, a different view. the direction in religion is one of preservation, maintaining the existing order as it , whilst in evolution the dynamics are in constant motion of exploring new orders which by nature are transitory.

An interesting account that names and refute all arguments favoring a godly existence of any sort. ... As David Hume wrote over 200 years ago in his Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, "What peculiar privilege has this little agitation of the brain which we call thought, that we must thus make it the model of the whole universe?"

Is God Trying To Talk To Someone In America?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  6-30-2009    6
What's worse, many pastors avoid talking to their congregations about repentance and self sacrifice. So, like the vampire Lasat, they drain them of true spiritual life, while seducing them with voter-pamphlet sermons and feel-good theology. The organized church is in big trouble today--the message of repentance is a flat subject among churchgoers. People want to pull a voting lever, offer vocal support for whatever politician pays lip service to a few hot-button social issues, and shout hallelujah as they drive off in their Lincoln. Satan smiles and waves as they go by. What America needs is a repentant, spiritual church, not the political arm of a dominionist cult. Want to argue that point? Do it with the God who says, "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

An Open Letter to Closed Minds
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  6-30-2009    7
A challenge to orthodoxy tends to be ignored at first. But if it gains popular support, the first move is to discredit and silence the challenger. “Belief” is the crux of the matter. No amount of evidence will change the consensus view until a sufficient number “convert” to a belief in the new theory. “It gets worse. As the evidence accumulates, the two camps will not only fail to reach consensus but actually be driven further apart - propelled by their different views ..And worst of all, there is no prospect of such a consensus unless the two sides can agree about the cause of the data.” Such a conclusion bodes ill for any attempt to change the status quo. An important scientific innovation rarely makes its way by gradually winning over and converting its opponents. What does happen is that its opponents gradually die out, and that the growing generation is familiarized with the new ideas from the beginning.” Applicable to both science and religion, I reckon. :)

Rep. Sally Kern’s Proclamation for Morality
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  6-29-2009    2
Sally Kern’s Party of Jesus, formerly known as the Republican Party, has found the cause of all of our woes, oh happy day! According to Sally, the nation's current problems are due to our overly permissive society’s acceptance and promotion of gays, abortion, divorce, and all around lack of Christian faith. From the Proclamation: NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we the undersigned elected officials of the people of Oklahoma, religious leaders and citizens of the State of Oklahoma, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world, solemnly declare that the HOPE of the great State of Oklahoma and of these United States, rests upon the Principles of Religion and Morality as put forth in the HOLY BIBLE. She’s a very conflicted person. She calls herself a Christian but hates people who do not follow her faith. In fact she and her Baptist preacher husband disowned one of their sons for being gay. How Christian is that? http://www.queerty.com/sally-kern-scrubs-gay-son-20080312/

Social Justice
foxyarse
by foxyarse  6-28-2009    1
Social justice is what faces you in the morning. It is awakening in a house with adequate water supply, cooking facilities and sanitation. It is the ability to nourish your children and send them to school where their education not only equips them for employment but reinforces their knowledge and understanding of their cultural inheritance. It is the prospect of genuine employment and good health: a life of choices and opportunity, free from discrimination. Mick Dodson, Annual Report of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, 1993

Shooting Them In The Foot
debbyski
by debbyski  6-28-2009    4
"Conservatives touted abstinence-only education, which was a flop, when real sex education was needed, most desperately in red states. According to 2006 data from the Guttmacher Institute, those red states accounted for eight of the 10 states with the highest teenage birthrates. And, a study titled “Red Light States: Who Buys Online Adult Entertainment?” that was conducted by Benjamin Edelman, an assistant professor of business at Harvard Business School and published earlier this year in the Journal of Economic Perspectives found that subscriptions to online pornography sites were “more prevalent in states where surveys indicate conservative positions on religion, gender roles, and sexuality” and in states where “more people agree that ‘I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage.’ ” They could avoid this hypocrisy by focusing more on what happens in their own bedrooms and avoiding the trap of judging what goes on in everyone else’s."
