POPSMcCain, Graham: Dead Wrong About Obama Approach On Iran McCain and Graham seem to desire the cowboy diplomacy of the George W. Bush years, asserting that Obama is being too cautious on Iran. However, a return to the diplomatic belligerence of the previous administration would be a disaster. It would play directly into the hands of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei whose harsh response to the persistent protests is presently serving to loosen his grip on Iran's political reigns

POPSMore CIA Torture Docs to be Made Public This Week and Next Continued: He eviscerates Dick Cheney's much publicized explanation of the CIA interrogation tactics. So, we've got a lot to look forward to over the next week. The un-redacted statements from "high-level members of al Qaeda" will be released on Friday. However, these won't do much sway the opinions of Bush defenders. The 2004 CIA Inspector General report, having been prepared while Bush was still in power, will be more difficult to deflect. We can expect the CIA IG report to be released on June 19. Let's just hope the CIA doesn't get carried away with the black marker.

POPSRepublicans Focus On Pelosi Sideshow Really shocking stuff. However, this damning information is somehow being drowned out in mainstream media (MSM) coverage by a sideshow clearly peripheral to the torture controversy: Nancy Pelosi and her tiff with the CIA.

POPSTransforming the Nuclear Weapons Complex The Nuclear Weapons Complex Consolidation Policy Network has released a new report called Transforming the US Strategic Posture and Weapons Complex for Transition to a Nuclear Weapons-Free World. The report outlines in great detail a plan to shrink the existing US nuclear weapons complex from eight sites to three. The report is the result of a two-year collaboration among six citizens’ groups based near many of the nuclear weapons complex sites. To download a copy of the report visit: http://www.trivalleycares.org/new/reports/NWeapPosture=ComplexFNL.pdf.

POPSJuan Cole's "The Coming McCain Military Draft" McCain will need to institute a draft for young American men (and, given the times, maybe for women as well). McCain, just like the recent Bush Administration's hawkish rhetoric has been proven by the Russian/Georgian conflict to be nothing more than a bluff. Sure, there was a lot of tough talk and fist shaking at the Russians but no real actions were taken against them either by the Bush Administration. I wonder if those young McCain supporters realize what they are asking for? I doubt it. Though many of us already were seeing the writing on the wall, after many started serving in these theaters on second tours, than third, than forth, than for some fifth......................, the Military nor Country can sustain these misadventures let alone protect from the Blowback which will be from the Hatreds we've created!

POPSJohn Murtha Murtha was a Marine with the 34th Special Infantry Company (4.00 / 4) in Vietnam 1966-67. He received the Bronze Star with Valor, 2 Purple Hearts, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal.

POPSThe Party continued; I was starting to get loaded, and this lady friend of my mother's said to me, "Well, did you kill anybody?" She's got a martini and a cigarette. She had no idea what she was asking. She was somebody who I'd looked up to for years as a kid. I said, "You have no idea of the dimension of your question. You just threw that out like, "Did you ever deliver newspapers as a kid?" I started staring her right in the eyes: "Do you realize what you're asking? Do you have any idea of the nature of your question?" And I left, I just split and I thought, "Oh, man."

POPSBachmann on GI Bill, Muslims There is common sense in dealing with our problems. And then there is mob hysteria and the blaming of others for our problems. I prefer common sense.

POPSIf McCain were best person to lead country now We've Had Two Victories in Iraq (0.00 / 0) "Mission Accomplished" Apparently not enough to bring the troops home! "The Surge Worked" And still not enough to bring the troops home, but instead have more serving in theater than before 'the surge'! What's the next catch phrase??

POPSEmbedding with the Taliban A (good, "old-fashioned") journalist ... (4.00 / 2) is never there to examine one side of a story. American journalism has been in a sad state for many years. **Warning: slightly topical tangent alert:** Hell, we never heard more than the one ever-saintly angle on Mother Teresa for crying out loud, whereas so many in the rest of the world at least had the opportunity to examine other info. If you ask your average Indian exposed to her works, she isn't regarded as a saint. Granted, the whole point behind missionary work is conversion to the missionary's faith, but she was held out to be to be the ultimate humanitarian ... and that is simply not the truth. I know, I know -- Mother Teresa?? You can't trust anything. :) If we never had folks like Nir, we'd never see the inside of many worlds or have a single clue whether we're being propagandized by our own media and government. The one thing America needs a lot less of is ignorance.

POPSMcCain Lies Again, Repeats False Claim He ‘Received The Highest Honor And Awards’ From Every Vets Gr As ThinkProgress has repeatedly documented, McCain is either willfully lying or he is delusional about his record — and the meaning of “highest awards.” In fact, McCain has recently stood on the opposite side of all three of the groups he mentioned: – Disabled American Veterans (DAV): In a list of 36 “key votes,” shows McCain “Voted Against Us” 16 times. (Obama “Voted With Us” 17 times, and against only once.) – Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW): Endorsed Sen. Jim Webb’s (D-VA) GI Bill that McCain vigorously opposed; called McCain’s alternative GI Bill “very partisan” and said they “didn’t have much input” in its crafting. – American Legion: Endorsed Webb’s GI Bill and criticized McCain’s concern about how it would affect retention, saying the bill “would encourage young men and women to join the military.”

POPSVA claims found in piles to be shredded Peake said three of VA’s 57 regional offices were involved, without naming them. Veterans of Foreign Wars said they were told four regional offices — in Detroit, St. Louis, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Waco, Texas — were identified as having documents in shredding bins that should not have been there. “The VA inspector general conducted a routine investigation of Detroit’s mailroom and discovered five documents in the shredder bin, then three pieces are found in St. Louis, two in Waco, and some more in St. Petersburg,” he said. “The question that begs to be asked and answered is how many veterans had their disability and compensation claims disappear down a paper shredder?” The halt in shredding was ordered by Patrick Dunne, the retired Navy rear admiral sworn in just weeks ago as VA’s new undersecretary for benefits. “Secretary Peake must hold everyone involved personally accountable for this disgraceful management failure,

POPSPowell Stands Against Smears Colin Powell, though, might be more on point with his observation than he knew. One of things you quickly learn when you're sent to Iraq or Afghanistan is that the overwhelming majority of Muslims in those nations are peace loving people, who just want to be able to raise their families in a decent environment. Essentially, their overall hopes and dreams are not much different than ours. Most of them actually have fond views of America and the west, and are constantly curious about American culture. To the extent there are any anti-American sentiments in Iraq, it's that Iraqis want this war to end, and want to get back to a stable life. But, it's not right to say that most Muslims are "anti-America.

POPSGOP VOTER REGISTRATION FRAUD “Voter registration fraud is a serious issue, which is why I vigorously investigate all allegations of elections fraud,” said Secretary Bowen, California’s chief elections officer. “Where there’s a case to be made, I will forward it to law enforcement for criminal prosecution.” For his business, Jacoby traveled California and a number of other states collecting petition signatures and registering voters. Under state law, signature-gatherers must sign a declaration stating that they are either registered to vote in California or that they are eligible to do so. Jacoby allegedly registered to vote at his childhood address to meet this legal requirement. Under California law, it is a felony punishable by up to three years in prison to register yourself when you are not entitled to vote and it is perjury to provide false information on a voter registration card.

POPSA Fallen American Soldier continued; his father, Feroze Khan, told the Gannett News Service in a story printed shortly after his death. "He looked at it that he's American and he has a job to do." Powell framed the entire "Obama is a Muslim" debate in striking terms with his reference to this fallen American soldier. "Is there something wrong with being Muslim in America? No, that's not America," he said. "He was 14 years old at the time of 9/11, and he waited until he could go serve his country, and he gave his life," Mr. Powell said. "Now, we have got to stop polarizing ourselves in this way." The highly charged rhetoric used by McCain and Palin to tie Obama to terrorism and Islam is once again an affront to all Muslim Americans. We saw this type of fear and backlash just after 9/11. We see it also in the McCarthy-like invocations of Michele Bachmann. I challenge Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin to tell this grieving mother that her son is anti-American because of his faith.

POPSWhy A Powell Endorsement Would Matter continued; Powell has been open about some of his own culpability, for presenting bad information to the UN, and accepts the fact that it will be a stain on his record, telling a reporter, "Of course it will. It's a blot. I'm the one who presented it on behalf of the United States to the world, and (it) will always be part of my record. It was painful. It's painful now." I'm not excusing Colin Powell for doing what he did. But, at the same time, him being one of the few who was in the White House during that time puts him in a unique position - to say he's been there and seen what happens when intelligence is no good and twisted, when we go into a war for the wrong reasons and in the wrong way, and that he's confident that Barack Obama is the guy to not only fix those mistakes, but to not repeat them.
