POPSFor Dudamel, it's all about the music In an interview with CBC News on Monday, Dudamel said he entered the free musical education system at age four. The system aims to expose every child, regardless of ability or socio-economic background, to music by giving them early and free access to instruments and music education. "The most important thing inside the system is the music changed totally my life," he said. "We are building better citizens with music. This is the real reason for the system. Music, yes, but to see your life in a different way. I really feel that I am totally a product of the system in Venezuela."

POPSIvan Illich - Deschooling Society Most of what passes for education is merely training Albeit sophisticated training that for the most part serves the interests of those who profit from the status quo

POPSReforming K-12 Education I suggest those eight periods go as follows: 1. critical thinking / debate / recognizing deceit 2. math 3. science (methodology) / sciences 4. reading / comprehension 5. writing / speaking 6. Lunch 7. history 8. social studies / civics / life skills That's a K-12 curriculum, BTW. At the 12+ point either specialization (such as technical training in one area... electronics, mechanics, furniture carving, plumbing) or long term educational undertakings with broader underpinnings would be considered.

POPSShortcuts make education fun This is just one of Jeff Harris' educational comics. Go to his past issues to see the remarkable collection he has created. His comics appear in the Classrooms section of a newspaper I read, and apparently are distributed by the NEA.

POPSHealth care, food, shelter and education, are basic human rights More from article: These will become the provision of adequate food, of shelter, of health care and education for all people, as a universal right. This will be paid for from an economic restructuring and the redirection of the countless billions a year now spent on armaments. These four basics seem not too much for anyone to ask - sufficient food, shelter, health care and education- and yet there is no country in the world where they pertain as a universal right. When they do, Maitreya says, the life of humanity will be transformed.

POPSWar over Teaching Reading You can find the article here A very interesting read for anyone in education or anyone with children. As someone who develops curriculum and consults in the field it's disheartening to see how the effectiveness of programs is ignored in attempt to gain a homogeneous method. I commend the Madison school district for not selling out.

POPSSome Schools Banning Homework At first, I was lie.. "Oh come on!, even I'm not THAT liberal..." but after reading the article.. well, if it i sin elementary school, and they have proven homework does little to help (besides reading at home), then maybe they have something. If the teachers instead focus on building good processes for teaching kids how to learn and studying in class, then maybe... I'm not an early childhood educator though...
